Trams have undergone a dramatic development in the last ten to fifteen years. Application in record time of innovative, mainly mechanical, technologies have enabled tram operators to specify vehicles which give much enhanced ease of access for all, but particularly for disabled passengers. Development work is further progressed, mainly directed to the area of weight reduction of running gear, bodies and electrical equipment.
