Recently, crash simulation has brought remarkable advances using the finite element method for evaluating vehicle crashworthiness and occupant protection. In side impact simulation, finite element analysis (FEA) system with the vehicle structure and occupants has been recognized as an effective method for safety evaluation. An essential requirement for the crash analysis needs a reliable and validated database of the dummy model and exlicit analysis program to assess the design to meet safety regulations in the new vehicle development. This paper described the development of a finite element EUROSID-1 (EUROpean Side Impact Dummy) for the Ford-developed explicit transient dynamic nonlinear finite element analysis program FCRASH. The dummy model was validated with various test conditions. Also, this paper presented EEVC (European Experimental Vehicle Commitee) side impact simulation including the impacted vehicle, the moving deformable barrier and the EUROSID-1 model. The FEM model responses compared favorably with the test data, and provided the confidence of the simulation prediction.
