The paper traces the history of marine regulation in Canada from pre-Confederation days of the pesent. It addresses a number of the external forces which have impacted the regulatory scene over the past few years and outlines in some detail the recent organizational changes which have taken place within the Canadian Coast Guard with respect to marine regulation. Thepaper concludes with a few comments concerning future directions.
