An alternative formulation, based on the Haskind relation, is presented for the vertical component of the linearized wave force acting on fixed bodies with vertical axis of revolution in finite or infinite water depth without superimposed stationary current. The approach is inspired by the longwave approximation, which is extended by the introduction of excitation factors, taking into account wave attenuation with depth and influence of the ratio between the horizontal dimensions of the body and the wave length. Examples demonstrate that, except for very low frequencies, approximations for these excitation factors do not lead to suffciently accurate results, so that in most of the cases the knowledge of the distribution of linearized velocity potential to haeve over the wetted surface of the body is required.
