Aerodynamics has a significant influence on existing train operations. With increasing train speeds it becomes ever more important. Consequently there has recently been greater emphasis placed on aerodynamics in railway vehicle specifications, particularly in the areas of pressure pulse effects in tunnels and the open air, as well as slipstream and cross-wind effects. This paper examines the aerodynamic phenomena which necessitate this increased attention by looking at specific clauses from recent vehicle specifications. An indication is given of what may be done by tenderers to demonstrate compliance. The role of aerodynamics in vehicle specifications of the future is discussed.
