Most of today's railway vehicles are equipped with a special brake system to avoid skidding and locking during braking. For this purpose speed detection is necessary. SKF has developed a new sensorised sealed and greased axlebox bearing unit which is already giving excellent results on high speed vehicles. This new solution is based on a tapered roller bearing unit (TBU) and equipped with sensors for the detection of speed, sense of rotation and bearing temperature.
