Indoor air quality (IAQ) is becoming an increasingly important consideration for all industries where people are concentrated in artificially ventilated areas. Over extended periods of time within enclosed living spaces, such as a spacecraft cabin, trace contaminants are produced by equipment, furnishings and passengers. If these contaminants are allowed to concentrate in breathing air, comfort and health of the inhabitants can be compromised by objectionable odors and toxic conditions. A trace contaminant control system is necessary to maintain the quality of breathing air within enclosed living spaces like spacecraft and aircraft enclosures. A novel approach to vehicle airborne contaminant removal based on UV illumination of the photoactive semiconductor TiO2 (titania) at room temperature is described. This paper describes fundamental surface chemistry measurements, prototype development, and theoretical models needed for practical application of the technology. The process of incorporating this information into the design of effective air-purifiers for cabin air applications is described.
