Good traction is often required when operating tractors on hard field surfaces such as compacted soil in dry irrigated fields or semi-arid areas. Existing wheel prediction models are not always applicable in these conditions because there is almost no soil sinkage under the tire load and cone index readings are greater than 1.4 MPa. The purpose of this article is to present a model that predicts agricultural wheel traction performance on hard soil surfaces. This hard soil-tire interaction model is based on the analysis of tractive stress along the soil-tire contact area and on the Julien Model. It allows prediction of wheel motion resistance, net tractive ration, and wheel tractive efficiency as a function of slip. A dimensionless soil-wheel term is utilized in the new model. This term is similar to wheel numeric or mobility number, which are terms usually used in predicting off-road equations. The dimensionless soil-wheel term is based on shear characteristics of the soil surface combined with wheel peripheral flexibility. The new model was verified by field experiments and results correlated well (average of R = 0.89) with predicted wheel performance. Therefore, the model can be used as a wheel traction model on hard soil surfaces.
