Due to Swiss environmental legislation, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has to minimize the negative influences of vibration in builings near railways. For every newly constructed or extended railway track, costly measurements and calculations have to be undertaken to assess future immissions of vibration and structure-borne noise. To predict such immissions and determine corresponding measures in a less expensive and simpler manner, a three-part computer program (VIBRA 1-2-3) was developed. VIBRA-1 is a relatively simple, semi-empirical calculation model to identify problem areas. VIBRA-2 is a much more complex and detailed program, including most of important factors influencing immissions. VIBRA-3 is a database containing measurements of vibration and structure-borne noise immissions, supplying the basic parameters for the models in VIBRA-1 and VIBRA-2. These three programs and their application are discussed.
