Studies have been made of using acoustic emission (AE) to monitor and evaluate fatigue crack initiation and growth in critical areas of aircraft under full size fatigue test. Emphasiss has been on sensor position selection; AE source simulation test; and noise reduction and signal processing. Present authors proposed the use of multiparameters in identifying crack inititation-related AE signals. The successful prediction of the initiation of fatigue cracks with length less 0.5 mm proves the great potential of AE technique in the evaluation of aircraft fatigue life.
