This paper deals with the main features of the engineering damage mechanics (EDM) and its application in the failure analysis of aeroengine components which are subjected to cyclic fatigue loading and creep damage at high temperatures. The general laws and models are studied systematically for creep damage at high temperature, fatigue damage as well as the coupling effect of creep damage - fatigue damage interaction. The EDM presents the advantages of seriousness, reasonableness and high precision of prediction of structure lifetime over other classic approaches, such as linear damage accumulation, strain amplitude partition and frequency modified methods. In this investigation, the life prediction techniques for high temperature conditions, including aspects of fatigue, creep and viscoplasticity etc. are considered successively by means of parametric relationships and continuous damage approaches. Our attention will then be focused to the practical apllication of EDM in the failure analysis and lifetime predictions of aeroengine components in practical service.
