The automotive industry is facing tough challenges in being successful in an increasingly more competitive market environment. The industry is focusing on weight and cost reduction as well as on more safety, higher comfort and better performance. New design concepts, light weight recyclable material systems and automated high speed manufacturing technologies are required to achieve these objectives. DuPont as a global leader in Fibers and Polymers has introduced in 1995 a new business unit addressing the needs of these markets. This paper describes two cost effective Thermoplastic Composite System for both non-structural and structural applications. DuPont XTC is a thermoplastic PET Polyester composite sheet system with non-woven glass fiber reinforcement. XTC is being developed for a variety of Class A body panels and functional part applications as a light weight alternative to commonly used thermosets sheet molding compounds, aluminium, magnesium and steel. XTC/S is a similar material with carbon fiber reinforcement aimed for structural applications. With TEPEX DuPont provides the industry with a material system and a technology incorporating continuous fiber reinforced material systems and high speed forming capabilities allowing part production cycle times of 30 till 60 seconds. TEPEX are custom-made sheet materials with Glass, Kevlar or carbon fibers combined with thermoplastic resins such as PA, PET or PBT. These sheets can he thermoformed into complex shapes and offer a step-change in weight savings and performance for structural parts.
