Short notice given only substantially as follows: A new tire called Green X, developed by Michelin, promises to last longer, cut rolling resistance, and reduce fuel consumption. Use of a new compound in which silica replaces some of the carbon black and strengthens the rubber and an innovative structure enabled engineers to reduce rolling resistance 35 %. (Rolling resistance is the energy a tire loses as it resists forces opposing its travel.) Traction on wet or snowy roads also improves, while life and ride are unaffected. Green X tires also reduce a car's energy consumption by 5 %. Michelin estimates that if every car in the U.S. drove on the new tires, annual fuel savings would reach 2,4 billion gallons. Carbon dioxide tailpipe emissions would also drop by 22 million tons and other hazardous emissions by 1,3 million tons.
