Concerns about methanol as an energy source has been increased nowadays from view point of anti-pollution and substitutes for petroleum-based fuels. Methanol-fired engine for road going vehicles are now in practical for environmental protection, however, researches and development on those for marine use have seldom found even looking through the world up to now. Fundamental studies on elemental problems of methanol-fired engine such as combustibility, ignitibility, tribological issues on sliding parts and corrosion of engine parts were carried out on a single-cylinder experimantal rig in Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. Based on the test results obtained from the above-mentioned test, The Hanshin Diesel Works, Ltd. began design work and construction of methanol-fired marine diesel engine of four-stroke low speed for commercial use. The world-first methanol-fired engine for marine use started in 1991 and operated on the test bench successfully showing good performance better than expected. Since methanol is clean chemical products, exhaust gas from methanol-fired engine contains no SOx and only a half of NOx compared with conventional diesel engines. Furthermore, clean combustion of methanol forms less sludge on engine parts and in lubricating oil resulting remarkable reduction in engine maintenance cost.
