Low-cost and compact gyro sensors are required for automotive applications. A novel principle for the detection of angular velocities exploits surface acoustic waves (SAWs). SAWs are electrically excited waves which propagate along the surface of piezoelectric solids. Owing to the fact that the propagation parameters vary greatly according to external factors, SAWs are very well suited for applications as sensors. The sensor described here determines the angular velocity from the acting Coriolis force which causes a change in the frequency of the SAW.
