The use of hybrid drivelines offers a good potential of reducing fuel consumption and emissions. To reach these goals, both the dimensioning of the components and the operating strategy for the hybrid driveline have to be optimized. In this paper aspects for the dimensioning and the operation of the electric components for a parallel-hybrid vehicle are presented. The influence of the battery voltage and the power rating of the electric motor on the behaviour of the hybrid driveline are discussed. It is shown that the battery voltage has only little influence on the power losses in the electric drive. Assuming a fixed battery weight, the effects of the power rating of the electric machine on the hybrid drive operation were investigated. A comparison between three electric machines with different power ratings is made.
