A competitive electric drive for individual mobility should allow the achievement of very high torque and overload capability and, at the same time, comply with diameter restriction due to housing the motor into a wheel rim. Slotless axial-flux permanent magnet machines (AFPMs) proved to be best candidates for application in electric vehicles as direct-drive wheel motors, for in comparison with conventional machines they present higher compactness, lightness and efficiency. Besides, lots of recent power electronic converters offer a wide range of high efficiency operations: among them smoothness in running condition and regenerative braking. This paper presents a newly-conceived electric vehicle which employs multi-stage water-cooled ironless stator AFPM. The space formerly occupied by iron is now replaced by a water duct which allows long-term 100 % overload operation. The multi-stage structure of the machine is suited to overcome the restriction on the machine diameter and to meet the torque requirement at the wheel shaft. The reliability of the drive, as a whole, puts it into strong evidence against the traditional engine counterparts. The paper describes the characteristics of the brake-train powered prototype vehicle rated 12.4 kW, 110 km/h.
