The paper describes a novel four-quadrant DC-DC converter used to drive a 180 V separately-excited DC motor from a 24 V DC voltage source. The converter uses two 2-quadrant converters connected back-to-back to provide continuous variation of the output voltage between plus/minus 180 V. A major improvement over a previous converter uses dual-wound energy transfer inductors, which result in the semiconductor switches not having to withstand the full output voltage. As the consequence the switches are cheaper and, since the low voltage-high current devices have a low on-state resistance, the switch losses are reduced. Various factors affect the converter design and performance, with perhaps the most important of these being the switching frequency. Using a mathematical model for the converter, the paper investigates optimization of the switching frequency, with regard to both the size of the energy storage inductors and output capacitors, and the overall efficiency of the converter. Practical results from a prototype 1kW unit are presented.
