Advanced lead/acid batteries are being succesfully applied for many types of electric vehicle, but it is important to select the correct type of battery for each application and to ensure that the battery management and charging system are precisely specified. The requirements for various classes of vehicle will be described and the application of different types of lead/acid battery discussed by reference to in-service experience. For larger vehicles including buses and refuse collection vehicles, flooded and sealed tubular lead/acid batteries may be applied. Flooded batteries offer excellent cycle life, and sealed gel-type tubular lead/acid batteries eliminate the nead for routine maintenance but need careful control for reliable operation. Valve-regulated lead-acid batteries using absorptive glass mat (AGM) separators are being widely used for small vehicles. These offer higher power densities compared to traditional batteries and can be specially adapted to meet the need for hybrid electric vehicles. The directions for future development of lead/acid batteries for electric vehicle service will be reviewed, and it will be shown that this chemistry will be the system of choice in terms of cost and performance for a great variety of practical applications.
