The design of the ETH hybrid driveline focusses on increased efficiency. Additionally, the design aims at achieving local zero-emission driving within a limited range. The driveline is configured for a 5 seat passenger car and enables a range of about 25 km of electrical driving, which is enough to cross most European cities. The configuration of the hybrid drivetrain includes a spark ignited 4-cylinder engine, an electric motor/generator (EM), a flywheel (as short time energy storage device) and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) of the steel-belt type. Three clutches allow several configurations of the driveline. The paper presents control strategies for a novel parallel hybrid vehicle concept, and shows how the various drivetrain components can be combined within different operating modes to optimize the vehicle's fuel efficiency. A novel specification method is presented that is used for the formal description of the plant and the chosen control strategies. The resulting control system includes both discrete events and continuous controllers. Finally, the structure of the chosen control system is presented and its reactive behavior is demonstrated in an example.
