A new concept for a hybrid drivetrain has been developed, which offers the possibility to reduce fuel consumption, to reduce emissions and to drive emission free for at least short distances. The drivetrain consists of an electrical and a combustion engine and a so called i2-gearbox which has a continuously adjustable ratio range of about 25. The control aspects and a control strategy for a parallel hybrid drivetrain with a CVT (continuously variable transmission) based gearbox are presented. Due to the configuration of the system eight different operating modes can be distinguished. The control system of the vehicle must be accurate and robust for all operating modes and for the transients between these modes.
