In those plants where agile production is made, each manufacturing line process reduces several part types and must have a high retooling capability. The conventional gauging machines, especially the complex ones for final inspection, often do not have the flexibility needed in this environment. It becomes necessary to apply to these machines different gauging methods that help to enhance their capability like the optical technique. In this paper a flexible optoelectronic station for automatic inline final inspection of shaft is described. It used 'vision' with linear CCD sensors and infrared light sources. The main measurement of the crankshaft are presented with relation to their tolerance and the possibility of the machine of accomplishing new measurement elaboration not attainable with conventional contact technology is mentioned. The machine can profitably be located at the very end of a manufacturing line for crankshafts or camshafts.
