Product development is the process of combining the available resources, at a reasonable cost, and within reasonable time in an appropriate manner for customer satisfaction regarding a certain demand. The requirements set by the customer for a high quality product with minimum cost and at the right time must be fulfilled. There may be various ways to achieve such a product, but the best way is undoubtedly the hassle free, lowest cost and quickest way. A design insenitive to spurious manufacturing factors, known as 'robust design', can be achieved most effectively by the application of Value Engineering techniques. VE is the logical evolution phase of simultaneous engineering by giving it a structure to build on which enables the contribution of all related disciplines producing a balanced design. The particular advantage of the VE techniques is that the process is flexible and can be adapted to different types of design/process definitions or problem solving demands. This paper attempts to clarify the myths explaning what VE is and is not, and how it can be tailored for application to different demands.
