The concept of intelligent automotive systems is being realized with the advent of microprocessors, smart materials, advanced automation, and artificial intelligence. Our research and development programs for increasing passenger comfort and vehicle intelligence have concentrated on integration of mechatronics into the active vibration and noise control techniques. This paper presents results of our three major projects in the development of microprocessor-based active mufflers; vehicle interior noise cancellation using smart materials; and active engine mounts for real-time vibration attenuation in a vehicle. These systems are operated based on our unique control system that incorporates feedback and pseudo-feedforward signals. Analytical and experimental results of these projects are presented. Further, key issues regarding implementation of a mechatronically-based control system in an automotive vehicle are discussed.
