Propeller and rudder have to be understood as a propulsion unit in which the propeller generates the thrust to keep the ship on speed and the rudder keeps the ship on course. Within the heavily interacting propulsion unit, the rudder improves the propulsion performance of the propeller whereas the propeller excites rudder vibration and increases the danger of cavitation inception on the rudder. Cavitation is caused by the local pressure at the rudder blade and by cavitating nuclei leaving the propeller. The first kind of cavitation may be tempered or completely prevented whereas the second kind may be hardly influenced. Considering the information on design data currently available, it is apparent that there is a need for an improvement in the detail aspects of rudder performance prediction, particulary when considering the influence of propeller interaction and when cavitation has to be feared. In modern rudder design the lift-drag characteristics including cavitation properties are required.
