The transient ECU functions are an important part in modern engine management systems to improve the engine performance and the driveability and also to reach the emission standards. The proper calibration of these functions requires new systems on the test bed environment for an efficient application. One important transient ECU function found in common ECU's is the transient control for gasoline engines. Due to different implementations of the transient control function and the number of parameters to adjust, the calibration of this function can be a tedious task. A systematic calibration procedure which can be applied to any particular implementation and done by a computer system is the key to better results and cost reduction. The example presented in this paper shows the results of a automatically calibrated fuel film compensator which brings good results, also during the important phase of engine warm-up. In the future new, flexible and easy to handle tools for engine calibration are necessary to contribute an important part for shortening the application time.
