First generation SL-resins are acrylate compositions which are characterized by a very fast curing reaction. The high shrinkage rate, however, causes distorsion and inacurracies in the part. These drawbecks are overcome by the new SL-resins based on epoxies. They have a lower photosensitivity than the acrylate resins, but give highly accurate parts. The low viscosity and high green strength make them especially suitable for the build style Quick Cast and the use of SL-parts as pattern for investment casting. A new application, which is now beeing studied at several sites in Europe and the US, is the direct fabrication of tools from SL-parts. Thus, a mold has been built from SL 5170 (build style ACES) for the injections of thermoplastics as polypropylene or polystyrene and succesfully used for the fabrication of about 500 geometrically simple plastic parts. The possibility to use SL-molds for the reaction injection molding (RIM) of polyurethanes is also studied.
