In order to study the behaviour of the suspended vehicle mass related to the non-suspended mass, it would be convenient to be able to measure in a rapid and reliable way the variation in their relative position, i. e., to measure the displacements in the damper. This measurement can be obtained using a sensor. An optical sensor is being developed to measure the displacements in a damper. The feasibility of applying this measurement technique is conditioned by the infrared transmittance of the damper oil. In order to study the factors above, the spectral characterization of damper oils in different stages of their life has been performed. The basic operation of the sensor is also explained. The dynamic behaviour of the damper has been simulated using the computer program BLOVE, with the aim of estimating the displacements in the damper.
