STEP/EXPRESS is increasingly used to model product data such as the bill of material of a car. The corresponding data instances populate not only STEP files but also STEP databases. The SDAI (Standard Data Access Interface) is being developed by ISO to access and manipulate these data instances regardless of the employed storage technology. When product data is finally subject to archiving (for legal and economic reasons), SDAI hardly offers any support. In this paper, we describe how to integrate archiving functionality into SDAI. First, we introduce new operations which can be invoked by SDAI applications. Secondly, the idea of archive repositories is discussed to allow for the uniform access to archived data. Although SDAI suggests to group data in self-contained collections, even archiving these collections yields problems. The proposals are illustrated through STEP's part 23, i. e. the C++ binding of SDAI. First experiences of SDAI-integrated archiving are drawn from the prototype which uses the ODBMS Object Store.
