The application of knowledge-based systems in complex plant systems improves flexibility, efficiency and quality of planning and control of manufacturing systems. One of the main problems is to enlarge availability of manufacturing systems in order to decrease costs, to increase the output of the system and to produce with lean system capacity. That is why the international research team analyzed the fault analyses and maintanance scheduling system in a big car plant in general and the relations between system components and system breakdowns in detail. An expert knowledge based system was developed on the basis of an existing shell and integrated in the plant information systems. The objectives are to optimise the systems behaviour, to integrate shop floor staff for that and to find a lean organization for maintenance.
