As Rapid Prototyping and more specifically StereoLithography (SL) comes of age, the usefulness of the resultant model has increased as well. Valeo Climate Control uses parts produced on their SLA500 first as aids to check fit/form and function. Function is using the part to test air flow in a limited capacity. Second use is to produce some sort of 'rapid tool' to produce urethane parts for further evaluation and testing, this may include mounting the assembly into a vehicle. The third and final use is to produce prototype tooling capable of injection molded processes and materials that come as close to production as possible. Each step of the way the SL part plays the key roll in the success of the program. This paper describes the process that Valeo Climate Control uses in the course of program development, and talks about both the time and dollar benefits of using this technology.
