The present paper describes a system of jointly applied calculation methods used to improve and to assess engine cooling configurations. Thereby, methods like computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are coupled with empirical correlations in order to gain knowledge about the performance of the whole cooling system at different operating conditions like idling or low vehicle speed/full load. Within that strategy, the individual programs assist in the optimization of componente like water pump, cylinder head gasket or piping.
