This paper shows that well-designed copper/brass radiators can be weight-competitive with brazed aluminum radiators. The comparison is for cores operating at the same heat duty, air frontal velocity and coolant flow rate. The analysis is based on performance predictions using the computer program PSURAD. The copper/brass radiators also provide lower air-side pressure drop, because the fin thickness is less than that for aluminum cores. New copper/brass designs have also been developed that can effectively compete with the one-row brazed aluminum designs using deep tubes (e.g. 25 to 31.8 mm tube depth). This is possible using the 'tubes-touching' design which does not require a spacing between tube rows in the air flow direction. A brazed copper/brass radiator has been developed which provides greater strength than lead-soldered joints.
