Schottel bagan manufacturing rudderpropellers in the early 1950s and since then has been the worldwide market leader in the sector of azimuthing propulsion units. Based in Spay, Germany, on the Rhine, the company is nowadays reknown not only for its rudderpropellers; its transverse thrusters, pump-jets and steering systems also enjoy an excellent reputation all overthe globe. Although Schottel's activities have always been, and still remain, focused on civil commercial shipping, these propulsion systems have for decades been used for military purposes as well. Since the 1970s, for instance, increasing numbers of mine countermeasure vessels (MCMVs) have been equipped with rudderpropellers, transverse thrusters and more recentlywith pump-jets too. This article describes the technical requirements that have to be met by minesweepers and minehunters as well as outlining technical solutions on the basis of a number of selected examples. Subsequently, the current situation in the field of propulsion systems will be considered and future developments briefly touched upon.
