This paper describes performance test results for the Ball Flight Prototype single-stage split Stirling cycle cryocooler, which was selected for use on the AXAF X-ray Spectrometer/Cryogenic Subsystem (XRS/CSS). The cryocooler incorporates the basic Oxford heritage cryocooler design acquired by Ball from Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Two opposed compressors are connected to a momentum compensated single-stage integral displacer/regenerator coldhead. Thermal performance in a vacuum environmet from -40 to +50 deg C are described as well as control of vibration, coldtip temperature control, EMI measurements, and the results of testing of modifications to increase the environmental operating temperature range. Ongoing life test results are also discussed. The next generation Advanced Flight Prototype will be tested during the summer of 1994. It is ready to be incorporated into a flight system.
