In place of a centrifugal type automatic timer hitherto used for diesel engines, application of electronics for controlling the fuel injection timing more precisely in response to the operating conditions of engines has been considered. Till today, such systems have been tried in the laboratory stage and several articles have been presented by several manufacturers, but no systems have proved practical for heavy duty trucks so far. In view of the fact that the ratio of fuel cost in the total cost of a truck's life cycle is extremely great, if such a system can contribute to saving on fuel consumption, it is conceivably acceptable as a market product. With such a view, the authors attempted to develop a new system. This system controls the fuel injection timing optimally in response to varying engine speed and load by use of a microcomputer and a hydraulic actuator having an independent oil circuit. The construction, operational principle, characteristics and market response of this system are described in this paper. The most difficult part of such system is the actuator for the vehicle's diesel engine due to its higher actuating load. The double splinted shifter driven by hydraulic pressure, was applied for the actuator. Independent hydraulic circuit applied in this system shows superior characteristics for both cold startability and reliability. For the diagnosis, the self-diagnostic system was applied on ET Control itself and the off-board tester was also developed in parallel. A good comment such as more than 10% fuel saving can be obtained via ET Control with ER monitoring was given by the customers. A more sophisticated approach including such as optimum control of injection rate, injection quantity and spray pattern etc. should be made in the future.
