Brazil has successfully introduced ethanol as an alternative to gasoline and the national alcohol program enjoys high priority in the energy policy of the government. Already in Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Rio, Belo Horizonte, Recife, etc. more than 2 million vehicles of various brands are operating on a 20 per cent alcohol-gasoline blend and no problems of any significance have been experienced. At the end of 1979, all the Brazilian passenger-car manufacturers started large-scale production of straight-alcohol cars. The number of alcohol filling stations will be increased over the next few months, in order to give the alcohol cars nationwide freedom of movement. The reasons for the vigorous implementation of Brazil's world-leading alcohol program, and the participation in it of the Volkswagen group, are dealt with in this paper.
