The possibilities of developing an injection system of traditional type to guarantee the optimum and reliable function on a small marine heavy-fuel diesel engine with 900 to 1000 revolutions per minute were investigated. This paper describes the boundary conditions for the injection equipment enabling economical combustion over the entire load range of the engine when the engine is operating on heavy fuel of relatively inferior quality. The facilities enabling running from quay to quay on heavy fuel are described. The design of the injection equipment, in both mechanical and hydraulic respect, is motivated by field experiences and the results of theoretical investigations. Both the low-pressure system, i.e. the fuel feed system, and the high-pressure system, i.e. the injection pumps and injection valves, have been included in the study.
