Present and future marine fuel quality is of vital interest to engine manufacturers and ship owners. Fuel quality and its relation to service problems is discussed. Test work with a three cylinder Bolnes 3 DNL engine, representative of crosshead diesels, and a single cylinder Caterpillar engine, representative of medium speed diesels is described. The results for both engines show that sulfur is the main fuel characteristic that significantly affects wear and lubricant base depletion. Piston deposits show the highest correlation with fuel asphaltenes in the Bolnes, and with fuel Conradson carbon in the Caterpillar engine. Used oil insoluble level correlates with fuel asphaltenes content in the Caterpillar engine. Future residual fuel quality and treatment is discussed.
