Since technology has advanced into areas with extreme climatic conditions, machines and equipment operated under such conditions have to meet more stringent requirements. This report describes the special measures to be taken for these applications. These statements are based on experience gained in the course of designing a high-speed air-cooled diesel engine for construction site vehicles run in arctic temperatures. Starting with the preparations for starting an engine at very low temperatures, the paper outlines the problems - and their solutions - that turn up between starting, warming up and final operation of an engine. Reference is made to details of design which had to be modified in view of the fact that the properties of usually applied materials and operating means change when used at low ambient temperatures. The report terminates by quoting experience gained upon application of several thousand engines in construction site vehicles reaching distance of several 100000 km under extreme operating conditions.
