Usually, booster stations are installed at specified intervals on long distance natural gas pipelines. Many booster stations use gas compressors driven by gas turbines, and the rotational speeds and the number of operating units are automatically controlled according to the change in the flow rate of the transported gas. In designing the control equipment, it is necessary to have complete knowledge on the characteristics of the station equipment and the behaviour of the whole pipeline. In October 1976, Hitachi, Ltd. signed a contract with V/0 'MACHINOIMPORT' USSR for one complete gas pipeline booster station to be installed near the city of Volgograd as one of the stations for the natural gas pipeline from Orenburg to Europe. And this booster station has five modules of Hitachi-GE Model M3142, 14600 HP simple cycle, two shaft, heavy duty gas turbines. The authors had developed the gas pipeline dynamic simulator, and analyzed pipeline characteristics and equipment operating conditions to assure a most safe and suitable control system of the pipeline booster station. On the basis of the result of dynamic simulation, a safe and reliable booster station control method is designed and developed.
