This paper describes the development and investigations carried out during the past 5 years on recycle and closed-cycle diesel engines. First, the authors extracted several technological problems on recycle and closed cycle diesel engines, and thermodynamically analyzed the effect of the composition and temperature of the working gas on the heat cycle and performance of these engines. After the examination of technological problems and a series of preliminary tests on recycle diesel engine, the authors constructed a land-based testing equipment with intention to develop an underwater power source. With the equipment the authors carried out various experiments on load characteristics, performance, dynamic characteristics. After that they modified the test equipment into a closed-cycle diesel engine. And, they conducted some experiments on the absorption of carbon dioxide, engine performance under closed-cycle condition, the regeneration of carbon dioxide absorbing liquid, and the corrosion of system component. Subsequently on the basis of these data, the authors succeeded in developing underwater practical power source with the hydraulic output of 22 PS, and with the electric power output of 16 kW, using recycle diesel engine. And the latter was used at a water depth of 100 m as the electric power source. The results of this underwater experiments are also described.
