This paper describes a method used for measurement of the loads imposed on chains used for marine diesel engine camshaft drives and the results that were obtained. Radio telemetry was the technique employed on this problem, and was selected because of the simplicity of installation and reliability of operation that had been demonstrated on other applications. The adaptation of the telemetry equipment to this situation is discussed including the calibration and testing. The results were selected from the large amount of data obtained from diesel engines on test bed and dock and sea trials. It will be shown that the results obtained measured precisely the transient loadings imposed on timing chains, which previous work on camshaft torque loadings or chain tensioner loadings had been unable to describe.
