A statement from Lloyd's Register proves that in spite of quite great efforts in a certain number of vessels, automation has not up to now brought the expected results. The result of this failure is a wrong approach to the complete problem. In fact, today automation is generally designed to suit an existing installation, or in the best cases, to slightly adapt an existing one. On the other hand, if a ship should be run with a reduced and possibly unqualified crew, it is necessary that the complete ship should be considered as a single unit. It is not only necessary that the machinery can be run and monitored without engineers in the control room, but that in all cases which may arise, such as fire, accident, engine failure etc. the necessary steps can be taken immediately and efficiently, so that the ship can safely reach the next port. The use of block systems, as mentioned earlier, seems to be the right approach and should not only be used for the cooling or lubricating circuits, but also the complete plant. For example, auxiliary engines may be installed in separate boxes, with their own fire detection and fighting system, which, when starting to function would take care of all circumstances, without interfering in the service of the other equipment . In view also of the increasing size of super tankers, bulk carriers and container ships, it may be of advantage to consider twin-screw installations which completely separated engine rooms. The authors believe that the basic reasons for such a situation is a lot of opposition thinking in the various marine fields, as well as certain concealment of the ship owner economist in planning and higher initial capital cost in the next new building. It can be said that up to now it has been tried in a higher or lower degree what automation may bring of advantages but that never, or seldom the problem has been taken as a basic parameter. When this will be the case some interesting ship installations may be described.
