A number of new diesel engined ships of the Shell Fleets have been equipped with centralised engine controls and instrumentation. Four of the five largest ships, shortly to be commissioned, will have engine rooms unattended at night. All ships are fitted with bridge controls. The arrangement of these installations is discussed and a short account given of sea going performance. The paper is divided into four main sections: arrangement of engine control rooms, instrumentation, cooling system controls and alarm systems, bridge controls, a comparison between pneumatic and electric installations, service performance, the unwatched engine room and future trends.
