The author compares combined cycle and regenerative gas turbine systems. The effect of cycle on plant efficiency is outlined and the variation of flame temperature with turbine inlet temperature discussed. The selection of combined cycle for marine application is shown: 1. Variation of optimum steam conditions with gas turbine exhaust temperature. 2. Description of a novel method of heating feed water. The starting system for a marine gas turbine is shown. Furthermore the author describes the fan starting system and test results with a 4000 HP gas turbine. The combined cycle for cargo ships is dealt with: 1. Application of the combined cycle to meet commercial astern power requirements. 2. The use of residual fuel oil in gas turbines. At last the author discusses combined cycle for naval combat ships.
