The running conditions of tankers are of a very peculiar nature: For instance being at sea most of the time the delays for vessels maintenance or repairs are extremely short; also the aim of obtaining the lowest running costs per ton-mile loaded implies the use of heavy grade bunkers, as well as the increase of the loading capacity. The adjunction of turbo-chargers to diesel engines has proved to be a high improvement. Simple, practical and homogeneous applications are stated in this report. Some difficulties, such as wear of the liners and the burning of the pistons, seem to be almost settled. The survey and trials ought to be carried out jointly by the manufacturers or builders and ship owners. The ship owners need more and more powerful engines and wish a satisfactory achievement on this ground.
