The twin big liners 'Saturnia' and 'Vulcania' were the first motorships to be equipped with main engines of more than 10000 SHP output. Considering such a pioneering circumstance and the not less important one that the above vessels are still after 25 years of uninterrupted activity covering a regular line service and represent, therefore, a still effectual solution of the power concentration problem, FIAT and Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico (CRDA) thought it would be of interest to publish the main particulars of their operation. The first section of the paper covers the peculiarities of the old propelling machineries of both ships and of the modern ones that substituted them in 1935-1936. This description is followed by an analysis of the operation data collected during that long period of operation.
