By arranging suitably the disposition of the exhaust pipe of a diesel engine working on the four-stroke principle, the capacity of an engine can be increased by about 25 % without the pistons being subjected to additional strain. A further increase of 20 % can be obtained if a blower is fitted to the suction side of the engine. The suitability of the above is demonstrated on marine and traction engines. In the latter case the instantaneous reaction assured by the exhaust scavenging impulses is specially notable with load fluctuations, which is of particular advantage for diesel engines in locomotives for shunting service.
