The increasing need of very high octane number gasoline, imposes the rerunning of heavy distillates and their catalytic treatment. One of the residual products is a low cetane number and a high sulphur content gas oil, which for commercial reasons must be added to the distillate gas oil. The present paper explains: characteristics of combustion for different mixtures used into high speed engines with straight injection or with pre-combustion chamber; results obtained in service by the use of one of these mixtures into supercharged diesel engines fitted in shunting locomotives of the S.N.C.F. The problem of diesel railway engine lubrication is dominated by two imperatives: 1. selection in quality of the lubricating oils which are suitable for the used engines and the service requirements; 2. constancy of this quality. Preliminary tests, on a single cylinder 5 HP engine, at the 'Institut Francais du Petrole', allowed to repeat service conditions at the S.N.C.F., in order to class straight mineral oils as regards quality. The S.N.C.F. by means of cathodic distillation, verifies at every supply the constancy of the quality. For additive oils, an engine test allows to make sure that oils which give satisfaction at this test, will not cause important failures in service. It seems that, actually, no laboratory test allows yet to verify the constancy of the quality of an additive oil.
